But what is commonly known for years is - when it’s time - a promise ring is given to another as an expression of love that one has for the other. Simple as it sounds, this definition still doesn’t quite explain the meaning behind a promise ring. As such, this subject matter raises so many questions that remain unanswered. But fret not, we’re here to unravel the truth behind a promise ring’s significance.

WHAT IS A PROMISE RING?

In a romantic relationship, a promise ring is presented to another as an indication of commitment and fidelity to the other. Once accepted by the recipient, the same intention and feelings are returned to the giver.

Usually, presenting a promise ring as a gift or exchanging them signifies the next stage of the relationship - engagement - followed by marriage.

One is usually given with the understanding that it will be replaced by an engagement ring in the future, though that is not always the case.

Young couples usually give or exchange promise rings as they aren’t fully ready for an engagement or wedding.

No matter which significance speaks to you, a promise ring never fails to showcase your genuine affection and devotion for your partner.

THE HISTORY BEHIND PROMISE RINGS

Promise rings have been around for ages, specifically several hundred years. They date all the way back to ancient times - where traditions among couples remain solid - with a promise ring representing a sign of fidelity and loyalty.

In the 2nd century BC, Roman brides especially were wearing them on their finger, as the law stated that a certain amount of time had to be waited out before the marriage ceremony.

From the 15th century to 17th century, posey, or posie rings were the definition of expressing romantic affection for the other through engraved heartfelt poems. While acrostic rings - spelling out a word in the gemstone - such as “love” or “regard” were favoured during the Georgian and Victorian times.

In modern times, promise rings have seen an increase in popularity ever since celebrities like the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus wore them.
