Frequently Asked
01Why are lab-grown diamond rings lower in price than mined diamond rings?

Lab-grown diamonds are, on average, about 50 to 60% lower in price than mined diamonds. Mined diamonds are priced higher than lab grown diamonds for a number of reasons. They are rarer and limited in quantity, and require more labour costs for mining the diamonds, transporting the diamonds, as well as cleaning, cutting, and polishing the diamonds into gem-grade ones. In contrast, lab-grown diamonds are, as the name suggests, produced from a laboratory and grown under a controlled environment. This means a shorter time is needed for a diamond to be grown from a diamond seed. Additionally, because the grown diamonds are already so pure to begin with, less effort is required to make them into jewellery-ready gems. So, couples looking for budget-friendly engagement rings tend to go for lab-grown diamond rings, allowing them to enjoy the dazzling qualities of diamonds at a much more affordable price.

02Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?

Yes, lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds in the sense that they are virtually indistinguishable from natural diamonds. In terms of chemical and physical composition, lab-grown diamonds are exactly the same as naturally-occurring diamonds. Both are made of carbon, with atoms arranged in a cubic structure. In 2018, the Federal Trade Commission declared in its new guidelines that all diamonds – irrespective of their origins – are diamonds. Gemological institutions like GIA and IGI also provide diamond certifications for lab-grown diamonds using the same criteria and standards (i.e. the 4Cs of diamonds) as they do for natural diamonds. In fact, the lab-grown diamonds sold here at Love & Co. are all Type IIa diamonds, equivalent in quality to the top 2% of the world’s natural diamonds.

03Can you tell a lab-grown diamond and mined diamond apart?

Most people are not able to tell a lab-grown diamond apart from a mined diamond of similar quality. Even jewellers won’t be able to tell the difference using their diamond testers. Despite being virtually indistinguishable, most lab grown diamonds contain an inscription to differentiate itself from mined diamonds. The inscription lies on the diamond’s girdle which corresponds to what you identify on the diamond certificate. With the right tools, jewellers can identify lab-grown diamonds by looking for this microscopic inscription.

04What are the advantages of buying lab-grown jewellery?

Lab-grown diamonds are affordable, more sustainable, and more ethical. For the same price, you can get a bigger lab-grown diamond as opposed to a natural mined diamond at most jewellery shops in Singapore. You can also buy lab-grown diamonds with peace of mind knowing that lab-grown diamonds are conflict-free, have a lighter carbon footprint.

05How do I choose a lab-grown diamond ring?

Choosing a lab-grown diamond ring is the same as choosing any other diamond ring. At Love & Co., our lab-grown diamonds are created using the Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) method, producing Type IIa diamonds – the top 2% of the world’s diamonds. CVD diamonds are a superior method of production compared to High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) production. As such, you can focus your attention onto other design aspects of the ring, such as your preferred metal type and ring setting. If you are buying it in-stores at Love & Co., our friendly store consultants can also help you measure your ring size or guide you in your selection.
